Dear Friends,

I’m sure most of you have noticed the interest in “alternative” types of music that has taken place in the last few years. I’m not going to try to analyze the phenomena, but I rejoice in it. When the consumer demands variety, the wise shopkeeper responds. Have you noticed how many more blues recordings are available at Coop Records stores? Even large chain stores are catching on; Best Buy, and others are responding to your demands for music that is “out of the mainstream.”

Besides playing and listening to the music, I enjoy reading biographies, autobiographies, and various blues related historical material. I would like to see a bigger variety and selection in books and periodicals in the bookstores. Living Blues, Blues Review, Blues Access, Big City Blues, Sing Out!, Downbeat, Cadence, Dirty Linen, and many other periodicals would be found on the magazine rack…if you badger the manager enough times and get him to talk to his supplier. The same holds true at the bookstore. There are hundreds of wonderful blues related books that are both entertaining and informative. Many have great pictures!

I am frequently asked, “What books can I read to learn more about the music and the people of the Blues?” That’s a tough question, as there are hundreds of titles, and I’m no book reviewer. What I’ve done is put together a list to get you started. (The list is always growing.) It also includes the authors, publishing company names, and cities. So, all you have to do is walk into the book shop and ask if you can place an order, or use any of the major Internet book sellers web sites. When the book retailers start getting people ordering books in this way, they will start to think about stocking a wider selection of music related books in their stores. Just like the record stores have done. You can try this same technique at your local library, as well. Ask if you can talk to a person in the “collection development / acquisitions” department. Show them your list!

My list is strictly a public service. I have no interest in selling books, just sharing information.

Have a healthy and happy New Year! That includes happy listening, playing, and reading!
